I try to write about three times per week. Most of it is pretty good and will probably help you grow your business. If it doesn't, then I probably can't help you.

You can use a traditional RSS Feedreader with this fancy-dancy link. I think this approach is harder but if you want to do it the hard way, who am I to say otherwise?

Creativity

Creativity is a learned skill. It is something that requires practice. If you would like to be creative you cannot expect it to naturally come. Children tend to exhibit it a bit more naturally because they are willing to fail a little more than us adults.

It's our policy

Policy or People?

If your policy prevents your customers (or even your employees) from being taken care of, then you should stop citing policy and start fixing problems. The bottom line: your policy sucks if it causes your customer grief.

Are You Getting It Done?

Nothing great was ever accomplished by saying, “I think I’ll wait for someone else to do it.” Often we don’t do what needs to be done. We hope someone else will take care of it. Are you passing the buck or are you seizing opportunities to be a success?

Choices and Consequences

I think the best lesson we can teach our children is that life is like physics. Every action has an equal and opposite reaction. When we live beyond our means in managing our finances, at some point, we have to pay more in interest.

Social Media is About Being Social

Remember that social media is not about the pitching products. It’s not about the Internet or technology. Social media is about talking to people. It’s about building and maintaining meaningful relationship one tweet or status update at a time.

The (lack of) Brilliance of Automation

I am amazed how often I see them make stupid decisions and I think that often times it centers around automation. It centers, really, around the fact that someone didn’t think through all the scenarios before they automated the process.

You can't win them all.

I have to recognize that I can’t win them all. There will always be those that complain. There will always be those that think they know more. They simply won’t be happy with any level of service. To those people, I’m sorry I won’t be as good as you want.

The Value of Education

Many students are struggling more with formal education at a college or university because there are so many other opportunities to learn elsewhere. With the Internet providing more and more education opportunities this question becomes more pertinent.

Has bad service become acceptable?

When an Internet service provider (ISP) says they can’t help you, maybe you should ask again and again until they finally do. I think that we’ll have to deal with bad customer service from ISPs until one comes along that can really do it right.

Five Tech Skills You Must Know

These 5 areas of tech are basic & fundamental to being able to communicate in today’s online world. Don’t demonstrate your ignorance & not learn how to do these very basic things. You simply do not have the luxury of saying, “I don’t know how to do that.”

It's Always the Waitress' Fault

If you are in the restaurant business, your customer doesn’t care what is going on in the kitchen. Your customer doesn’t care that your delivery truck didn’t make it. Your customer only cares that his or her experience is made the best it can be made.

Teaching Through Writing

You may not think how the first solo pilot to fly across the United States, the founding of Disneyland or World War II propaganda relate to Web strategy, but they do. In fact, even building a house or Biff’s Cheese Shack can help you market online.

Good Versus Great

If you want to truly be great at providing your customers what they deserve, it’s not enough to address problems as they come up. You must proactively fix problems before they are an issue. If you can’t, the best you’ll ever be is just plain good.

Just Be You

I think that everyone suffers from an identify crisis. We want to be something we are not. We want to be accepted… usually at any cost. The real key is to just be you. Be honest with yourself and those that matter will naturally join you.

Mobile Web Requires Accommodations

A common approach for building a mobile website is to create an alternate website for your mobile visitors to see when they use their mobile platform. That’s a problem. When you go to a mobile website, it’s usually optimized for phones & not for tablets.

Technology Doesn't Matter

The challenge is that technology can be a bit unnerving for some business owners. It’s not unnerving because it’s technology, per se. It’s unnerving because of the need to understand, yet again, something new. But, technology isn’t really what really matters.

Lazy Teachers Create Lazy Students

We do a significant disservice to those we teach by not holding them to a high standard. By giving them a pass when they make small mistakes, we are not preparing them for the real challenges they will face when it really matters.

The 5 Worst Words in Customer Service

With a glazed look, the girl behind the counter said, “May I help who’s next?” I was the only next person. She wasn’t even looking at me. There was no one else she would likely consider helping and she asks to help who’s next-not how can she help me.

Watch your news sources!

It’s probably important to know what your news sources feel is important to share. Seems to me that if a major retailer is suggesting the boycott of your employees (congress) that you should probably know about it even if you don’t agree with it.
